Modernist architecture — including the World Heritage Site Berlin
Modernism Housing Estates — has gained recognition; yet, research
has focused more on architectural history and urban planning than on
materiality. Although its conservation efforts are advancing, materials,
aesthetic qualities, and the history of material change remain
inadequately studied. Growing awareness of historical surfaces and
new methods in material science are opening up interdisciplinary
research paths.
The international conference “Materiality and Color in Modernist
Architecture: From Science to Everyday Heritage Conservation
Practice”, taking place May 7–9, 2026 at the Architektenkammer
Berlin, brings together experts from all fields of heritage conservation
— architects, conservator-restorers, heritage scientists, and art
historians. The conference explores how historical knowledge,
material research, and methodological approaches, can strengthen
contemporary conservation practice of modernist architecture.
Join the dialogue between science and practice and help shape the
future of heritage conservation.
The conference is being held in cooperation with the German National
Committee of ICOMOS, the Berlin Heritage Authority, the Technical
University of Munich, and the Dresden University of Fine Arts. It is
supported by the Berlin Chamber of Architects.
At the same time, it marks the conclusion of a three-year DFG research
project on the Berlin Modernist Housing Estates:

Tagung „Schön? Toxisch! – Gift- und Gefahrstoffe beim Umgang mit Kulturgut II“

Der VDR  veranstaltet – mit freundlicher Unterstützung des MARKK – die zweite Ausgabe der fachübergreifenden Tagung „Schön? Toxisch!“.

Im Fokus stehen Gift- und Gefahrstoffe, die seit Jahrzehnten den Arbeitsalltag in Restaurierung, Denkmalpflege, Museen (Wissenschaftler:innen, Depotverwaltung, Fotograf:innen, Reinigungsfachkräfte) sowie in Archiven und Bibliotheken prägen. Neueste Erkenntnisse und Forschungsergebnisse tragen zur Implementierung innovativer arbeitsschutztechnischer Maßnahmen bei.

Die Tagungsreihe bietet Arbeitgeber:innen, Ausführenden, Eigentümer:innen und Verantwortlichen eine Plattform zum Austausch über aktuelle Erkenntnisse, praktische Erfahrungen und zukünftige Herausforderungen.

EAST MEETS WEST is a five-day training workshop led by Keisuke Sugiyama, Professor of Conservation at the University of Applied Arts in Yamagata (Japan). Previously, Sugiyama worked for eight years as a senior conservator of Japanese paintings at the British Museum’s Hirayama Studio in London. As a participant, you will explore traditional Japanese materials, adhesives and tools, gaining a comprehensive understanding of their unique properties. You will also have the opportunity to craft a Karibari to understand its intricate structure and function in depth. In addition, you will receive hands-on training in lining techniques using a Karibari, combining practical application with a thorough theoretical grounding of this Japanese method. Our aim is to deepen your understanding of Japanese materials and techniques, enabling you to incorporate them effectively into Western conservation techniques. The workshop also offers a forum for the exchange of knowledge about paper conservation from East Asian and Western cultures. This is a unique opportunity to learn from a Japanese conservator. You will be provided with a set of original best quality Japanese tools to enable immediate application of newly acquired techniques and facilitate prompt integration into your daily practice.

Das Zentrum für Museale Sammlungswissenschaften und die Landessammlungen Niederösterreich organisieren gemeinsam mit dem Stiftsgymnasium Seitenstetten eine Tagung zum Thema "'Endstation Museum? Zum Erhalt historischer Lehrmittelsammlungen in Schulen" am 19. Mai 2026 an der Universität für Weiterbildung Krems.

Die Tagungsbeiträge zeigen Wege zum Erhalt historischer Lehrmittelsammlungen und unterstreichen deren Bedeutung für Schulen. Sammlungswissenschaftliche Perspektiven und denkmalpflegerische Aspekte werden ebenso berücksichtigt wie die vielfältigen Herausforderungen kustodischer Aufgaben thematisiert. Als Weiterbildungsangebot für den Umgang mit historischen Lehrmittelsammlungen versteht sich die Tagung als Zeichen zur Stärkung schulischer Kustodiate und der Sensibilisierung musealer Einrichtungen zu dieser Thematik. Zugleich eröffnet eine gemeinsame Reflexion unter Berücksichtigung interdisziplinärer Zugänge spannende Perspektiven auf das Verhältnis und die Interaktion zwischen Schulen und Museen.

Sudan’s archaeological heritage faces growing pressure from overlapping political, environmental,
and economic crises. Since the outbreak of armed conflict in April 2023, archaeological sites,
museums, and collections have become increasingly vulnerable to both direct and indirect forms
of damage. Direct impacts include looting, vandalism, and destruction affecting museums and
archaeological sites across the country. At the same time, the conflict has weakened heritage
management and security structures, leaving many sites exposed to increased climate-related
hazards and economic pressures. In this sense, the conflict has accelerated pre-existing vulnerabilities
affecting Sudan’s cultural heritage.
Beyond the immediate impacts of conflict, longer-term processes, such as climate change and
the rapid expansion of gold mining, have further intensified the deterioration of archaeological
sites and historic buildings across Sudan. Socio-political instability has disrupted institutional
protection. While international organisations and archaeological project teams have explored
ways to provide support from outside the country, the role of archaeological professionals on the
ground has become essential. Together with local communities, they have assumed key responsibilities
for monitoring and safeguarding heritage, amidst one of the worst humanitarian crises of
this century.
Drawing on research and collaboration with local communities from the pre-conflict period,
this lecture examines how these intersecting pressures are reshaping the ways archaeological
heritage is understood, managed, and cared for. Particular attention will be given to community-
based initiatives and collaborative efforts, using cases from Old Dongola and the Sikoot
region, which illustrated how the challenges triggered discussions about vulnerability and the
importance of caring for heritage, highlighting persistence and resilience. The lecture will also
touch upon early initiatives that sought to document damage to cultural heritage and raise
awareness during the initial phase of the conflict, including work undertaken through the Sudan
Heritage Protection Initiative (2023–2024), bringing together the efforts and care of civil society
for heritage protection.

We kindly invite conservators-restorers, academic personnel, scientists, researchers, students and others involved in conservation-restoration practice to present their recent work and studies to the professional and general audience at the meeting and the poster exhibition.
The conference will be held in Slovene. English summaries will be available for those who do not speak Slovene.
The book containing the abstracts of all the contributions will be presented at the meeting.

Am 30. Mai 2026 eröffnet auf Schloss Loosdorf (Bezirk Mistelbach) die Ausstellung „Broken Collection Contemporary". Die Schau präsentiert Ergebnisse aus vier Jahren transdisziplinärer Zusammenarbeit zwischen Restaurierung, Wissenschaft und zeitgenössischer Kunst im Rahmen des vom Wissenschaftsfonds FWF geförderten Forschungsprojekts „Broken Collection" (2022–2026).

Im Mittelpunkt steht die sogenannte „Broken Collection" – eine im Zweiten Weltkrieg zerstörte Porzellansammlung der Familie Piatti, deren Fragmente bis heute im Scherbenzimmer des Schlosses erhalten sind. Restaurierte Objekte und neu entstandene Arbeiten internationaler Künstler*innen treten in Dialog mit den historischen Fragmenten und stellen die zentrale Frage des Projekts: Wann gilt ein Objekt als „beschädigt" – und welche neuen Bedeutungen können aus seinem fragmentierten Zustand entstehen?
