SUMMARY:World Archaeology Seminars (Hybrid) – »Future Archaeology: Frag
ile Past« Lecture Series: Heritage in a Time of Crisis Conflict\, Climat
 e\, and Community in Sudan
DESCRIPTION:Vortragende:&nbsp\;Tomomi Fushiya\, Polish Centre of Mediterran
 ean Archaeology\, University of Warsaw
 Sudan’s archaeological heritage
faces growing pressure from overlapping political\, environmental\,and ec
onomic crises. Since the outbreak of armed conflict in April 2023\, archae
ological sites\,museums\, and collections have become increasingly vulnera
ble to both direct and indirect formsof damage. Direct impacts include loo
ting\, vandalism\, and destruction affecting museums andarchaeological sit
es across the country. At the same time\, the conflict has weakened herita
gemanagement and security structures\, leaving many sites exposed to incre
ased climate-relatedhazards and economic pressures. In this sense\, the co
nflict has accelerated pre-existing vulnerabilitiesaffecting Sudan’s cul
tural heritage.Beyond the immediate impacts of conflict\, longer-term proc
esses\, such as climate change andthe rapid expansion of gold mining\, hav
e further intensified the deterioration of archaeologicalsites and histori
c buildings across Sudan. Socio-political instability has disrupted instit
utionalprotection. While international organisations and archaeological pr
oject teams have exploredways to provide support from outside the country\
, the role of archaeological professionals on theground has become essenti
al. Together with local communities\, they have assumed key responsibiliti
esfor monitoring and safeguarding heritage\, amidst one of the worst human
itarian crises ofthis century.Drawing on research and collaboration with l
ocal communities from the pre-conflict period\,this lecture examines how t
hese intersecting pressures are reshaping the ways archaeologicalheritage
is understood\, managed\, and cared for. Particular attention will be give
n to community-based initiatives and collaborative efforts\, using cases f
rom Old Dongola and the Sikootregion\, which illustrated how the challenge
s triggered discussions about vulnerability and theimportance of caring fo
r heritage\, highlighting persistence and resilience. The lecture will als
otouch upon early initiatives that sought to document damage to cultural h
eritage and raiseawareness during the initial phase of the conflict\, incl
uding work undertaken through the SudanHeritage Protection Initiative (202
3–2024)\, bringing together the efforts and care of civil societyfor her
 itage protection.
