Symposium: “Noble Collections of Ceramics and their History beyond Fragmentation and Representation”
The FWF PEEK Research Project BROKEN COLLECTION
invites to the international Symposium: NOBLE COLLECTIONS OF CERAMICS AND THEIR HISTORY BEYOND FRAGMENTATION AND REPRESENTATION
As part of the FWF (Austrian Science Fund) PEEK-Project “The Broken Collection” the
Symposium: “Noble Collections of Ceramics and their History beyond Fragmentation and
Representation” brings together scholars, conservators, curators and artists. The goal is to
explore the potentials of working with broken or fragmented porcelain moving beyond
conventional narratives of display and completeness.
Over the course of two days, experts from institutions such as the University of Applied Arts
Vienna, the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts Vienna, the Weltmuseum Wien, Augarten
Museum, Bundesmobilienverwaltung, Schloss Schönbrunn and international museums,
universities and galleries in London, Prague, Liberec, Ghent and Bergen will present case
studies and reflections on the conservation, interpretation and artistic engagement with
ceramics in both museum and research contexts.
Topics include historical aristocratic collections of porcelain, restoration practices, object
biographies, and artistic strategies of dealing with fragmentation. A special focus will be on the
transregional dimension of these collections, especially the connections between the Broken
Collection in Loosdorf and other European collections.
Participation is free of charge, but capacity is limited. Register at
