CICS-Ringvorlesung (Hybrid): Adressing the challenges of visualising organic binding media networks in porous painting layers
Understanding porous paint layers, although fundamental in their conservation, remains a challenge. Ptychography X-ray computed tomography (PXCT) combines two-dimensional ptychography with computed tomography methods. It allows for the three-dimensional investigation of samples non-destructively at the nano scale and is among the X-ray techniques with the highest resolving power. In this study of a porous, fragile ultramarine paint layer from the painting “Beach landscape with trees and boats” (Woll 637, MUNCH, Oslo) completed in 1905-06 by Edvard Munch, 30 µm wide pillars were prepared using focused ion beam. PXCT coupled with advanced sample preparation enabled the visualization of the proteinaceous binder network of nanobridges within the paint layer at a resolution of 32 nm. Data processing including material segmentation and quantification was carried out for the study of porosity and binder-pigment interfaces.
