SUMMARY:CICS-Ringvorlesung (Hybrid): Adressing the challenges of visualisin
 g organic binding media networks in porous painting layers
DESCRIPTION:Understanding porous paint layers\, although fundamental in the
 ir conservation\, remains a challenge. Ptychography X-ray computed tomogra
 phy (PXCT) combines two-dimensional ptychography with computed tomography 
 methods. &nbsp\;It allows for the three-dimensional investigation of sampl
 es non-destructively at the nano scale and is among the X-ray techniques w
 ith the highest resolving power. In this study of a porous\, fragile ultra
 marine paint layer from the painting “Beach landscape with trees and boa
 ts” (Woll 637\, MUNCH\, Oslo) completed in 1905-06 by Edvard Munch\, 30 
 µm wide pillars were prepared using focused ion beam. PXCT coupled with a
 dvanced sample preparation enabled the visualization of the proteinaceous 
 binder network of nanobridges within the paint layer at a resolution of 32
  nm. Data processing including material segmentation and quantification wa
 s carried out for the study of porosity and binder-pigment interfaces.
