USA-New York: Associate Conservator, Wooden Objects
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is seeking a conservator responsible for the care and conservation of painted and gilded European and American wooden furniture, decorative objects, and historic interiors across the Departments of Medieval Art and The Cloisters, European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, the Robert Lehman Collection, and the American Wing. The Department of Objects Conservation upholds the highest professional standards in the treatment, mounting, and installation of three-dimensional works of art across the Museum’s two venues. The department’s mission-critical responsibilities extend to all curatorial departments and encompass every aspect of the Museum’s collections-based activities, including acquisitions, deaccessioning, exhibitions, capital projects, scholarly research, teaching, and outreach. Annually, the department addresses over 7,000 object requests, ranging in scale from single beads to historic interiors and architectural stone elements embedded in the Museum’s buildings.
As one of three conservators dedicated to European and American wooden furniture, objects, and historic interiors, you will be responsible for the conservation of painted and gilded wooden furniture, decorative objects, and historic interiors from the fourth through the early twentieth centuries. The ideal candidate will have experience in the treatment and documentation of painted and gilded wood, familiarity with historic interiors and furniture, and the ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams. The position offers the opportunity to work in a world-renowned institution, contribute to the preservation of significant collections, and participate in major conservation projects.
